Regina Coeli
"No amount of revision, editing or truncating can create a devotional composition out of a work that is intrinsically secular in character." - Pope Pius X
The works on this CD have been selected to showcase some compositions which have not been aired for perhaps 100 years. By a motu priprio of 1904, Pope Pius X sought to restore Plainchant to its central position which it had enjoyed in the medieval church period. Compositions which were considered more suitable to the concert hall were discouraged, and the Society of St Gregory of America published a "Black List" of compositions and arrangements which were considered "clearly antagonistic" to this motu proprio. This CD explores some of these compositions which are complemented by newer works.
The choir on this CD comprises:
William Petter (director, tenor)
Lottie Greenhow (soprano)
Madeline Smith (mezzo-soprano)
John Murton (bass)
John Eady (organ)
Producers: Paul Plummer & William Petter
Recording engineer: Sam Lea

"William Petter is to be congratulated on gathering together a talented quintet (four singers and an organist) to perform this wonderful music, much of which has not seen the light of day since it was black-listed by the Motu Proprio of Pope Pius X in 1904 [...] The music on this recording certainly stirs the soul [...] This is a wonderful CD that brings to light little heard music that deserves a wider audience in church. It is music that, whilst once rejected, continues to serve the liturgy and aid the worship of God [...] Wonderful music, produced in a context that promotes the Catholic faith is to be applauded and supported by us all." - Petra Robinson, New Directions Magazine, February 2014
